How they compare

Mauritania currently reports 46.5 micrograms per cubic meter against 42.69 micrograms per cubic meter in Mongolia, a difference of 3.81 micrograms per cubic meter.

That makes Mauritania's figure about 1.1 times Mongolia's.

The two have swapped places 4 times across 34 shared years of data; in 1990 it was Mauritania ahead.

Mauritania ranks 16th and Mongolia ranks 19th of 200 countries.

Mauritania has averaged higher in every one of the 4 decades both report.

Head to head by decade

Decade Mauritania Mongolia Difference Ahead
1990s 50.14 micrograms per cubic meter 25.89 micrograms per cubic meter 24.25 micrograms per cubic meter Mauritania
2000s 46.61 micrograms per cubic meter 35.14 micrograms per cubic meter 11.46 micrograms per cubic meter Mauritania
2010s 47.9 micrograms per cubic meter 44.07 micrograms per cubic meter 3.83 micrograms per cubic meter Mauritania
2020s 46.49 micrograms per cubic meter 43.15 micrograms per cubic meter 3.35 micrograms per cubic meter Mauritania

Averages of every year both report within each decade.

Population-weighted exposure to ambient PM2.5 pollution is defined as the average level of exposure of a nation's population to concentrations of suspended particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic diameter, which are capable of penetrating deep into the respiratory tract and causing severe health damage. Exposure is calculated by weighting mean annual concentrations of PM2.5 by population in both urban and rural areas.
